Bright Kreutz sungrazing comet destroyed by the Sun
A bright Kreutz sungrazing comet appeared in ESA/NASA SOHO C3 coronagraph imagery on July 11 and entered the C2 field of view on July 13, just before it faced its total destruction.
As of July 1, 2022, SOHO has discovered 4 489 new comets via Sungrazer Citizen Science Project.
Kreutz-group continues to dominate the discoveries, accounting for up to 85%. The Meyer-group comets account for approximately 7%, and non-group (random/sporadic comets) for~5%.
“We still know next-to-nothing about Meyer-group of comets,” said Karl Battams, Computational science Dr. at USNRL and Principal Investigator of SOHO/LASCO & Sungrazer Project. “A rough orbit is pretty much all we have…”
