A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit South Sandwich Islands region at 21:14 UTC on December 16, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 2 km (1.2 miles).
The epicenter was located 2 600 km (1 617 miles) E of Tolhuin, Argentina.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
