A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.6 hit north of Ascension Island, North Atlantic Ocean at 02:59 UTC on August 18, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 762.4 km (473.7 miles) N of Georgetown (population 538), Saint Helena, and 845.6 km (525.5 miles) SW of Greenville (population 16 434), Liberia.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
