• Cyclonic Storm “Asna” forms in the Arabian Sea; Gujarat reports 32 dead, more than 32 000 evacuated

    Gujarat’s Saurashtra-Kachchh region has been battered by torrential rains produced by a deep depression that intensified into Cyclonic Storm “Asna” today. The resulting flooding has led to 32 deaths, and the evacuation of more than 32 000 people. The intense flooding has also led to crocodiles taking over the city of Vadodara. Asna is the second named storm of the 2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.

    An amazing dayling fireball was seen and heard over Eastern Cape, South Africa on Sunday, August 25, 2024. Initially thought of as space junk, it was later confirmed to be a car-sized meteor that entered the atmosphere between 06:30 and 07:00 UTC (08:30 and 09:00 LT). Reports of the following sonic boom were heard more than 200 km (124 miles) away from the site of the original sighting.

    The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its first megaquake advisory on Thursday, August 8, 2024, several hours after the M7.1 earthquake hit near the coast of Kyushu. The advisory warns that if a major earthquake were to occur in the future, strong shaking and large tsunamis would be generated.

    Hurricane “Debby” made landfall near Steinhatchee in Florida’s Big Bend at 11:00 UTC on Monday, August 5, 2024. Debby had minimum central pressure of 979 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) at the time of landfall, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It was moving NNE at 17 km/h (10 mph).

  • Extreme rainfall hits China’s Hunan, claiming at least 15 lives

    Remnants of Typhoon “Gaemi” dropped extreme rainfall over China’s Hunan province on July 28, 2024, causing severe floods and landslides in which at least 15 people lost their lives. Gaemi made landfall in Fujian Province on July 24, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph), forcing the evacuation of 290 000 people.
