Strong and shallow M6.1 earthquake hits Cuba region
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit the Cuba region at 18:00 UTC on June 8, 2026. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 13 km (8 miles). According to PTWC, there is no significant tsunami threat from this earthquake.

The epicenter was located 105 km (65 miles) WNW of Mantua (population 10 797), 125 km (78 miles) W of Minas de Matahambre (population 34 419), 127 km (79 miles) WNW of Guane (population 16 548), 148 km (92 miles) W of Viñales (population 27 129), and 154 km (96 miles) WNW of Pinar del Río (population 186 990), Cuba.
1.3 million people are estimated to have felt light shaking.
Based on all available data, there is no significant tsunami threat from this earthquake. However, there is a very small possibility of tsunami waves along coasts located nearest the epicenter, PTWC said.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are mud wall and adobe block with concrete bond beam construction.
