Large landslide reactivation blocks A14 motorway and Adriatic rail line in Molise, Italy
A large landslide reactivated in Petacciato, Campobasso Province, Italy, on April 7, 2026, after more than 200 mm (7.9 inches) of rainfall within a few days, blocking a 4 km (2.5 miles) section of the A14 motorway and the Adriatic railway line and forcing precautionary evacuations. Approximately 50 people were evacuated as authorities activated emergency response measures and rerouted traffic across the region.

A large landslide reactivated in the municipality of Petacciato, Campobasso Province, on April 7, following several days of intense rainfall that produced accumulations exceeding 200 mm (7.9 inches). The movement affected a known unstable slope system with a front extending over 4 km (2.5 miles), resulting in the immediate closure of critical transport infrastructure along Italy’s Adriatic corridor.
The landslide blocked the A14 motorway between Montenero di Bisaccia and Termoli in both directions, and the “Adriatica” railway line between Vasto and Termoli. The disruption occurred in a section already affected by the recent closure of a segment of State Road 16 following the collapse of a viaduct in Montenero di Bisaccia (see last embedded tweet).
Approximately 50 people were evacuated from Petacciato as a precautionary measure. Additionally, authorities ordered the closure of schools across Campobasso Province for April 8, to reduce traffic pressure and facilitate emergency operations.

The Head of the Italian Civil Protection Department, Prefect Fabio Ciciliano, chaired a meeting of the Operations Committee at the Campobasso Prefecture at 16:00 LT on April 7.
The committee ordered the activation of civil defense volunteers and the establishment of alternative routes for highway traffic. Rail operator Ferrovie dello Stato diverted passenger trains away from the affected section of the Adriatic line.
Although no critical disruptions were reported for the National Health Service, authorities initiated precautionary measures to reorganize care networks for time-dependent medical conditions. Additional logistical adjustments were requested to ensure the continued supply of radiopharmaceuticals used in hospital nuclear medicine services.
Authorities began restoring partial functionality to the road network by April 9. The A14 motorway reopened to traffic through temporarily diverted lanes, and additional regional routes were progressively returned to service.
