Series of multi-vehicle collisions shut down parts of Highway 401 in Ontario

A series of multi-vehicle collisions involving about 50 vehicles shut down sections of Highway 401 in eastern Ontario, Canada, on the morning of January 27, 2026, according to the Ontario Provincial Police. The crashes occurred near Trenton in Quinte West, forcing a full closure of the highway in both directions as emergency crews responded.

Police said the collisions were reported Tuesday morning under winter driving conditions. The incidents involved numerous passenger vehicles and commercial trucks across multiple locations on the highway, resulting in traffic coming to a complete standstill.

The OPP confirmed that no fatalities and no life-threatening injuries were reported. Several people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, primarily as a precaution. Emergency medical services assessed additional motorists at the scene.

As a result of the crashes, Highway 401 was closed in both directions between Shannonville Road and County Road 30. Police implemented an Emergency Detour Route, redirecting traffic off the highway while responders worked to clear vehicles and debris.

Emergency services, including police, fire crews, paramedics, and towing operators, were deployed to manage the scene. A warming centre was opened at the Trenton Arena to assist stranded motorists affected by the prolonged closure.

The OPP stated that recovery operations and scene clearance were expected to take several hours. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and monitor official traffic updates before resuming travel.
