The potential tornado damaged four commercial buildings, other structures, multiple vehicles, and trees in Longview, Washington State.
The event occurred at the 500 block of 14th Avenue. It ripped the roof of one building, and the debris and roofing material were then carried and struck another building nearby, severely damaging its roof. Two additional commercial buildings on the same block experienced “light roof” damage from the wind.
“Despite the buildings being occupied at the time of the event, no injuries were reported,” said the Longview Fire Department.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a potential tornado moved through the area at around 15:13 local time on October 12.
“One witness described observing what appeared to be a funnel cloud or possible tornado at the time of the event. Based on the pattern and concentration of damage, officials believe the storm may have involved tornadic activity, though confirmation will depend on further evaluation by the National Weather Service,” said the Longview Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Koreis.
“Based on the wind damage, estimated peak winds of 129–137 km/h (80-85 mph) occurred, most likely with a wet microburst that produced damaging straight-line winds over a small geographic area,” said the NWS office in Portland, Oregon.
