3 injured as wildfire rages through Chile’s Chacabuco Province

A wildfire in Chile’s Tiltil Commune, Chacabuco Province, scorched 200 ha (494.2 acres) of land on Saturday afternoon, November 30, 2024, prompting evacuations, injuring three people, and raising suspicions of arson before being controlled by firefighting teams.

A fire broke out in Chile’s Tiltil Commune on Saturday afternoon, burning through 200 ha (494.2 acres) of land before being brought under control.

The forest fire affected the Huerto Familiares sector. A Red Alert was initially issued for the blaze but was lifted by Sunday afternoon, December 1.

At least three people were injured by the fire, and residents of the Santa Matilde sector were evacuated. Luis Valenzuela, the mayor of Tiltil, stated that there were suspicions the fire might have been started intentionally due to its location.

According to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED), three fire brigades, four National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) brigades, five CONAF technicians, one CONAF machine, and one CONAF water truck were deployed to control the blaze.
