Heavy rains trigger severe flooding in Marrakech, claiming two lives, Morocco

Floods triggered by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms between October 12 and 14, 2024, claimed two lives in the city of Marrakech, Morocco.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms caused severe flooding in the city of Marrakech from October 12 to 14. The floods claimed at least two lives and submerged streets and vehicles across the region.

The weather office had issued an alert for Marrakech before the floods, forecasting heavy rainfall ranging from 20 – 60 mm (0.79 – 2.36 inches) along with thunderstorms and strong winds.

Videos on social media showed vehicles and streets submerged in the murky waters. A Facebook video showed a leak in the roof of Marrakech Menara Airport during the intense downpours.

Floods and flood-related incidents had already claimed approximately 16 lives in September. During the first week of September, some parts of Morocco saw a year’s worth of rain in just two days, leading to 11 deaths due to severe floods.

Floods affecting Tata province swept away a bus on September 21, killing two, with some reports indicating at least five deaths.
