Deep M6.5 earthquake hits Sea of Okhotsk, Russia

A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia at 03:28 UTC on August 10, 2024. The agency is reporting a depth of 406 km (252 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.5 at a depth of 400 km (248 miles).

The epicenter was located 149.5 km (92.9 miles) E of Dolinks (population 11 989), and 155.4 km (96.6 miles) E of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (population 198 973), Sakhalin Oblast, Russia.

289 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, NWS PTWC said.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
