271 deaths and over 16 000 damaged homes in Maharashtra since April
The Indian state of Maharashtra endured a period of heavy rains and hailstorms since April 2016. Severe weather conditions have caused 271 deaths and severe to partial damage to more than 16 000 houses across the affected areas.
From April 1, 377 homes were completely devastated while 16 477 suffered some degree of damage. According to Dileep Kamble, the state minister, 1 417 small domestic animals and 1 593 large cattle animals have been reported dead.

"Aurangabad revenue division comprising eight districts is the worst hit in the current year as 70 people died there resulting from natural calamities. Amravati division is on the second number with 66 people losing their lives to such disasters. There are a total of six revenue divisions in the state – namely Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Amravati, and Nagpur," said Kamble.
The region of Aurangabad reported 208 small and 433 large cattle deaths, 31 homes devastated and 4 214 damaged. In the Amravati division 180 small and large cattle animals were lost, and more than 4 000 houses were damaged.

61 people died in the Nashik division while about 1 400 cattle animals were lost. 33 people have been reported dead in Pune division, and almost 600 cattle animals lost. The Nagpur division has seen 31 deaths, over 2 300 properties damaged and over 100 cattle losses.
According to media reports, Konkan suffered the least of impact. Its residents are already familiar with heavy monsoon rainfalls and have adapted to such conditions which resulted in lower number of causalities. 10 people have died and 49 cattle animals were lost while 825 houses have been damaged.
