El Hierro – harmonic tremors and strong whirpool activity

The whirlpool activity at El Hierro is still very strong and so is the harmonic tremor graph who is still saturated.  The current activity is needed to feed at least 3 active vents who are spewing magmatic material into the sea.  Sometime later today or later this week,  on condition that the current activity continues, the explosive phase or Capelinho’s / Surtseyan phase will start.

It needs to be confirmed, but some of the residents saw a faint red ligh, glowing from time to time in the Las Calmas sea. The ground is almost continuously trembling, underground explosions seem to succeed in a very short time .

Meanwhile, LaProvincia reports that 112 rockslides affect Los Roquille around the tunnel which was yesterday closed by PEVOLCA and Guardia Civil. La Restinga residents were evacuated at Saturday night again.

There are currently 3 jaccuzi vents located approx. 1 mile out of the La Restinga coast. Visit the gallery for latest images. Raymond Margalef  reports that the Jacuzzi is working strongly again showing floating lava/magma fragments,  and steam jets containing ash and  pyroclastic material pulsated several meters in the air.

PEVOLCA confirms a further increase in carbon dioxide emissions in El Hierro. The emission of CO2 is one of the parameters of a volcanic eruption precursors but has to be assessed jointly with others, such as deformation and seismicity depth.

EL HIERRO WEBCAM from El Pinar

Involcan Canary Islands has released a very important picture showing the water temperature at the Jacuzzi spot. The difference in temperature in between the normal sea water and the jacuzzi spot is 11 degrees C. (EarthquakeReport)
