A very strong earthquake registered as M6.6 at a depth of 50 km (31 miles) by Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) hit near the east coast of Honshu, Japan at 21:12 UTC on May 12, 2015 (06:12 JST on May 13). USGS is reporting it as M6.8 at a depth of 38.9 km (24.1 miles).
