• Santorini under state of emergency after thousands of earthquakes, Greece

    A state of emergency was declared for the Greek island of Santorini on February 6, 2025, due to significant seismic activity affecting the region over the past 10 days. The measure was announced by General Vasilis Papageorgiou, Civil Protection Secretary, and will remain in effect until March 3. The most powerful earthquake recorded so far, measuring 5.2 in magnitude, occurred on February 5. The continuous seismic activity has led to the evacuation of over 10 000 residents and workers from the island.

  • Greek EMAK rescue team deployed to Santorini as seismic activity intensifies

    In response to ongoing intense seismic activity, Greek authorities have deployed the EMAK emergency rescue team to Santorini, setting up temporary shelters near the indoor stadium. From February 1 to 3, 2025, more than 200 earthquakes have been recorded between Santorini and Amorgos, with the strongest reaching M4.8 on February 3. Schools on Santorini and nearby islands have been closed, and residents have been advised to avoid vulnerable structures. Additional flights have been scheduled to facilitate departures from the island.

    A swarm of over 50 earthquakes has been recorded in the geothermal area, north of Taupo volcano, since 18:00 LT (05:00 UTC) on Thursday, January 30, 2025. The strongest earthquake was M2.9, with many earthquakes being reported as ‘unnoticeable’ or ‘weak’ by GeoNet.

    A shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as an M4.5 hit near Falls City, Karnes County at 03:36 UTC on Thursday, January 30, 2025 (21:36 local time on Wednesday, January 29). The agency is reporting a depth of 3.7 km (2.3 miles). The quake was felt as far away as San Antonio, 71 km (44 miles) from Falls City.

The agency is reporting a depth of 9.7 km (6 miles). The USGS is reporting M6.0 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), EMSC M6.0 at a depth of 6 km (3.7 miles).
