Very strong and shallow M7.1 earthquake hits Maug Islands region, Northern Mariana Islands
A very strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.1 hit the Maug Islands region, Northern Mariana Islands region at 09:05 UTC on November 24, 2023. The agency is reporting a depth of 12.4 km (7.7 miles). EMSC is reporting M7.1 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicenter was located 551.9 km (342.9 miles) N of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, and 741.3 km (460.6 miles) N of Yigo Village, Guam.
There are no people living within 100 km (6.2 miles).
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, the NWS PTWC office in Honolulu said.
According to the USGS forecast, the probabilities for aftershocks in the next 7 days are as follows: greater than 99% for M3-4+, 83% for M5+, 32% for M6+, and 5% for M7+.
