Large tornado sweeps through Taif, Saudi Arabia

A large tornado swept through the countryside near the city of Taif, Makkah Province of Saudi Arabia on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

The twister tore through a field and swallowed rocks and stones in its path. At least one person was injured and transferred to a hospital.

The extent of the damage is not yet clear but videos show several destroyed structures and cars.

The National Center of Meteorology issued a warning on Sunday about the upcoming thunderstorms, heavy rains, hail and flash floods that were expected to hit most regions in Saudi Arabia over the next week. Sandstorms with wind speeds of over 50 km/h (31 mph) were also expected.
