Large and destructive tornadoes hit Southern U.S.

A severe weather outbreak hit the Southern U.S. on November 29, 2022, bringing strong tornadoes, very large hail, and severe gusts across parts of the lower to mid-Mississippi Valley, Mid-South, and parts of the Southeast. A few long-track strong tornadoes remain possible before the event is over.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center received 22 tornado reports on November 29, all from Louisiana and Mississippi.

The first tornado was reported by spotters at 15:29 LT near the town of Vaiden, Mississippi, approximately 128 km (80 miles).

AccuWeather reported a 5 cm (2 inches) large hailstone near where a tornado was spotted. While hail of that size during the month of November in Mississippi is unusual, it was reported on November 7, 2018, as well as on November 29, 2016, when a hailstone with a diameter of 7 cm (2.75 inches) was reported.1

The second tornado was reported at 17:10 LD in Bassfield, Mississippi, about 104 km (65 miles) southwest of Jackson. Possible structural damage was reported as an impact, as well as potential damage to local mobile homes. 

A damaging tornado hit Choctaw County at around 18:30 LT, about 160 km (100 miles) NE of Jackson. According to the NWS, a tree fell onto a house in Choctaw as a result of the twister.

Two tornadoes were reported near Columbus, Mississippi. The first touched down near Columbus Air Force Base in Lowndes County at approximately 18:30 LT, trapping several people inside a local grocery store. Lowndes County EMA Director Cindy Lawrence stated that those trapped made it out safe, and that another family trapped nearby inside a local home also made it out safe.

The second tornado was confirmed by radar southwest of Columbus, causing structural damage to a local volunteer fire and rescue building.

A large and destructive tornado hit Caldwell Parish, Louisiana at around 19:15 LT, causing significant damage and seriously injuring 4 people.

Reports of damage quickly came in, with trees reportedly blown onto houses according to local law enforcement, and debris was thrown thousands of feet into the air, AccuWeather reported.
