A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit off the coast of Aisen, Chile at 02:40 UTC on November 3, 2020 (21:40 LT on November 2). The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.
The epicenter was located 482 km (299 miles) WSW of Quellon (population 21 823) and 490 km (305 miles) WSW of Chonchi (population 12 572), Chile.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and rubble/field stone masonry construction.
