A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit the Chagos Archipelago region, Indian Ocean at 17:24 UTC on August 31, 2020. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.
The epicenter was located about 300 km (186 miles) NW of Chagos Bank, British Indian Ocean Territory, and 500 km (310 miles) SW of Maldives.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
