A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit Mid-Indian Ridge at 06:57 UTC on April 12, 2020. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicenter was located 1 491 km (926 miles) NNE of Port-Aux-Francais, French Southern Territories and 2 343 km (1 456 miles) SE of Rodrigues, Mauritius.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.
