Shallow M6.3 earthquake hits Kermadec Islands region, New Zealand

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit ESE of L'Esperance Rock, Kermadec Islands, New Zealand at 15:46 UTC on March 6, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 800 km (497 miles) NE of Whitianga and 811 km (504 miles) NE of Whakatane, New Zealand.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
