Widespread damage after major flooding in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Heavy rains and overflowing rivers in Puerto Plata province of Dominican Republic, caused major flooding on March 17, 2018. Hundreds of homes were affected, and significant loss of property is reported in some parts of the region.

Heavy rain started affecting the province on March 15, with 272.8 mm (10.9 inches) recorded at Puerto Plata Airport within 24 hours.

Two days later, at least 550 homes and other buildings were reported damaged. In addition, a bridge collapsed in San Marco, leaving many people isolated.

The worst affected areas include San Marcos, Cupey, Monte Verde, Las Mercedes and Los Rieles.

Country’s meteorological agency keeps weather warning in effect at the start of the week and urges residents to be vigilant for possible landslides.
