Waterspout passes close to Obninsk nuclear power plant in Russia

A waterspout was recorded near Obninsk nuclear power plant in Russia on May 23, 2013. It caused minor damage to buildings in the area. Obninsk is located about 110 km southeast of Moscow. The nuclear power plant APS-1 Obninsk (Atomic Power Station 1 Obninsk) was the first civilian nuclear power station in the world.

Construction of Obninsk nuclear power plant started in 1951 and the power station started with work on June 1,1954.For around 4 years, till opening of Siberian Nuclear Power Station, Obninsk remained the only nuclear power reactor in the Soviet Union; the power plant remained active until April 29, 2002 when it was finally shut down.

Day before waterspout event in Obnisk, another stronger twister occurred near city of Yefremov in Tula Oblast, Russia.
