Red auroras descend to Florida, marking first sighting since 2003 and 1989

A G4 – Severe geomagnetic storm on March 24, 2023, caused red auroras to appear over Florida and other low-latitude areas, marking the first such sighting over Florida in nearly 20 years. Numerous unusual phenomena were observed during this geomagnetic storm, including “aurora dunes” over Alberta, Canada.

CME impacts Earth, sparking G3 – Strong geomagnetic storm

CME impacts Earth, sparking G3 – Strong geomagnetic storm

Coronal mass ejection (CME) produced by a long-duration M3.7 solar flare at 20:30 UTC on February 24, 2023, reached Earth at 19:25 UTC on February 26. A glancing blow impact from CME produced by M6.3 solar flare on February 25 is expected during the afternoon hours on February 27. The resulting geomagnetic storm activity is expected to be significant, with both CMEs interacting with a negative-polarity coronal hole high-speed stream, potentially producing G3 – Strong or higher levels of geomagnetic storming.

G2 – Moderate geomagnetic storms expected

G2 – Moderate geomagnetic storms expected

Geomagnetic storms reaching G2 – Moderate levels are expected over the next 48 hours due to the influence of a geoeffective coronal hole in combination with an Earth-directed component of coronal mass ejection (CME) produced on May 13. The first effects are expected…

G1 geomagnetic storm in progress

G1 geomagnetic storm in progress

A recurrent, negative polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) is affecting our planet causing isolated periods of G1 Minor geomagnetic storming and vivid auroras. High-speed solar wind speed hit Earth late January 31, 2017. Geomagnetic K-index of 5 (G1 -…

New tool could predict large solar storms more than 24 hours in advance

A new measurement and modelling tool/technique, developed by Dr Neel Savani of Imperial College London and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, could give more than 24 hours' notice of large magnetic storms from the Sun that could be harmful to systems on…
