Since the early hours of November 24, 2023, Mount Etna has exhibited intensified Strombolian activity at its SE Crater, as observed by INGV-OE. Over the following days, this activity has persisted, marked by modest ash emissions and fluctuating seismic intensity, with the Aviation Color Code maintained at Orange.

A new Strombolian eruption started at Etna’s Southeast Crater at 18:40 UTC on August 13, 2023. The activity increased to lava fountaining over the next couple of hours.

A new eruptive fissure event opened at the northeastern base of Etna’s SE crater on November 27, 2022. The vent was first seen at around 17:00 UTC when persistent cloud coverage thinned.
Etna showed signs of increased unrest on November 15, 2022, forcing the Etna Volcano Observatory to raise the Aviation Color Code for the volcano from Green to Yellow. It was lowered back to Green at 10:20 UTC on November 16 after geophysical parameters returned to background levels.

An eruptive fracture opened on the northern flank of Etna’s Southeast Crater on the evening of May 12, 2022, after series of ash emissions. This led to the production of a small lava flow whose front reached the northern base of the crater. The flow is still active and producing ash- and steam-rich plumes as of early Saturday morning, May 14.
