• Japan’s JMA apologizes after issuing false M9.9 earthquake warning across large parts of Japan

    The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued an erroneous M9.9 earthquake early warning across large parts of Japan on October 16, 2026, following an actual M6.9 earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The warning was issued at 03:40 UTC, triggering the automatic suspension of Tokaido Shinkansen services before being withdrawn approximately eight minutes later. JMA apologized and began investigating the magnitude estimation error.

    China’s Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS), the largest of its kind globally, has been completed, according to an announcement by Min Yiren, the head of the China Earthquake Administration (CEA), on June 8, 2023. The system is anticipated to be fully functional by the end of the year, covering more than 15 000 monitoring stations, three national centers, 31 provincial centers, and 173 prefectural and municipal information release centers.
