Eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 94, approximately 3 km (2 miles) east of Elkhart, were closed for several hours on January 14, following multiple crashes that started around 15:51 LT on January 14.

According to Sergeant Ted Bohner from the Indiana State Police, the initial collision involved three vehicles in the eastbound lanes. This started a chain of secondary crashes in the same area, blocking all eastbound lanes.

Troopers found numerous semis and passenger vehicles scattered across the roadway; at least one vehicle had crossed into the westbound lanes and came to rest in a ditch on the north side of the road.

Authorities reported multiple injuries, with several people transported to local hospitals. A semi-truck driver was trapped in the wreckage for several hours and was later extricated and hospitalized. All reported injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Heavy snowfall and very limited visibility were reported in the area at the time of the crashes. Eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 83 for Mishawaka, while westbound lanes were diverted at Exit 96 for CR 17. Crews worked to clear approximately 30 damaged vehicles from the area.

All lanes of the Indiana Toll Road reopened around 20:00 LT on January 14, after hours of cleanup and recovery operations.
