The epicenter was located 88.8 km (55.2 miles) NNW of Villa General Roca (population 196), and 143.7 km (89.3 miles) ESE of Caucete (population 33 609), Argentina.
90 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking.
There are no damage reports.
The quake was followed by M4.1 at 01:32 UTC on September 22, at a depth of 148 km (92 miles).
