Shallow M6.0 earthquake hits South Sandwich Islands region

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit the South Sandwich Islands region at 08:32 UTC on September 6, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.0 at a depth of 40 km (25 miles).
The epicenter was located about 2 372.9 km (1 474.5 miles) SSW of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
The quake was followed by M5.3 at 09:04 UTC at a depth of 17 km (10 miles).
