Sangrur farmers claim 80 percent crop loss, accuse authorities of improper reports
Farmers in the town of Sangrur, state of Punjab, India said massive hailstorm hit the region on April 17, 2019, destroying 80% of their crops. Farmers accused authorities of improper reports, saying revenue department officers visited villages not their farms.
"The rain and hailstorm have caused around 80% damage to the standing wheat crop in various villages of Sangrur district. It’s likely to add to the debt on farmers. But officers concerned have shown only 20% loss, which is an injustice to us. We would launch an agitation if officers fail to conduct a proper assessment of damage," said Gobinder Singh, BKU (Ugrahan) Sangrur block president.
"How could the officers prepare damage reports without visiting fields? This has happened in many villages. We have demanded proper assessment of the damage because it’s third crop loss during last two years," said Labh Singh, Bhawanigarh block president of BKU (Ugrahan).
