M7.1 earthquake hits South Sandwich Islands at intermediate depth

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.1 hit the South Sandwich Islands at 02:26 UTC on December 11, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 164 km (102 miles). EMSC is reporting M7.1 at a depth of 150 km (93 miles).
The epicenter was located 14 km (8.7 miles) S of Montagu Island and 43 km (27 miles) N of Bristol Island.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said.
