At least 16 people have died and another 10 are missing after several days of heavy rain caused floods in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

According to Xinhua, some 92 000 people were forced to evacuate their homes on June 30 and July 1, 2018, after heavy storms started affecting the region, causing direct economic loss of about US$450 billion.

A number of multistorey buildings collapsed in the city of Baise, the westernmost prefecture-level city of Guangxi with a population of 3.8 million.

On the outskirts of the provincial capital Guilin, emergency workers used boats to rescue thousands of students stranded at Guilin Tourism University on July 2, Xinhua said.

Heavy rains started falling across the region on June 20. More than 124 000 people were affected, nearly 2 000 forced to evacuate and at least 3 killed by June 25. About 1 000 homes were destroyed or damaged at the time and about 5 630 ha (13 900 acres) of crops damaged.

Heavy rains also affected central Hunan province, where swollen Xiang River in Changsha rose to record levels of nearly 40 m (131 feet) this week. Xiang is a major tributary of Yangtze River.

Nearly 10 000 people in several towns of Sichuan's Jiangpu county were forced to evacuate.

Almost the entire Sichuan province was affected by heavy floods on June 27 and 28. Floods destroyed homes and businesses and severely affected a major cryptocurrency mining operation. Tens of thousands of mining devices were destroyed and the miners seem 'almost impossible' to repair, according to Golden Finance.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in Sichuan province, as well as Yunnan, meteorologists warned.
