Spain battling Catalonia’s worst wildfire in 20 years
At least 4 000 ha (10 000 acres) are affected by rapidly-spreading wildfires near the town of La Torre de l'Espanyol, 80 km (50 miles) from the coastal city of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain.
The Catalan regional government described the fires as the worst the region has seen in 20 years. They come amid record-breaking June heatwave affecting most of Europe with temperatures near or above 40 °C (104 °F) in Spain, France and Greece.
Hundreds of firefighters are on the scene, battling the blaze that broke out June 26 in Torre del Espanol. As of early June 27, at least 30 people have been evacuated from the town of Flix, Ribera d'Ebre and at least 4 000 ha (10 000 acres) affected.
