Floods leave at least 24 dead across western Yemen as rainfall continues

Flooding triggered by sustained heavy rainfall since late March 2026 has left at least 24 people dead across western Yemen, with the most affected districts located in Ta’iz and Al-Hodeidah governorates. At least 7 900 households have been affected along the Red Sea coast, and additional rainfall forecast over the next 48 hours raises the risk of further impacts.

Flooding has affected western Yemen for several weeks, with the most severe impacts recorded in Ta’iz and Al-Hodeidah governorates. The affected districts include Al-Mokha, Mawza, and Al-Wazeyah in Ta’iz, as well as Al-Khukha and Hays in Al-Hodeidah, where floodwaters have disrupted communities across coastal and low-lying areas.

At least 24 fatalities have been reported, while 7 900 households have been affected along the west coast. Inter-agency assessments place the number of potentially impacted households as high as 30 000.

Flooding has resulted in displacement and widespread damage, according to the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), although detailed infrastructure loss figures have not been released.

Moderate rainfall is forecast across western Yemen over the next 48 hours, maintaining the risk of additional flooding in districts already affected by prolonged precipitation.

DG ECHO has allocated EUR 175 000 through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund to support response operations implemented by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The funding targets approximately 24 500 people, focusing on the provision of shelter and hygiene assistance.
