According to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), radar data indicate a high probability that the wind phenomenon was a tornado, although final classification requires a field survey. IPMA typically confirms tornado events through an assessment of damage-path characteristics, including track continuity, rotational signatures, and debris dispersion patterns.
At the Eden Resort Hotel, 19 people were injured, including one in serious condition. Additional injuries were reported at the nearby campsite, with two individuals in serious condition and others treated for lighter trauma.
The fatality was confirmed by municipal authorities shortly after emergency response teams arrived on scene.
This was the most severe single-impact event associated with Storm Cláudia so far. The storm system has produced hundreds of weather-related incidents across Portugal, including localized flooding, fallen trees and infrastructure damage in several districts.
