A large landslide triggered by heavy rainfall hit Alberto Adriani municipality in the state of Mérida, Venezuela on February 8, 2023, leaving at least 2 people dead.

The landslide occurred near the banks of the Onia river in the settlement of Onia in Alberto Adriani municipality, causing significant damage to the area.

The event brought tragedy to the community as two people lost their lives when a bridge on the river collapsed. The victims, a family traveling on a motorcycle, were crossing the bridge when the landslide struck.

In addition to the loss of life, the landslide also caused damage to homes and businesses in the area, forcing the evacuation of 4 families and 3 commercial properties. The power supply in the area was also interrupted, causing further difficulties for residents.

The collapse of the bridge and damage to roads has caused severe transport difficulties in the area, cutting off a vital transport route. However, an alternative route has been put in place, and workers with heavy machinery have been deployed to help clear the road and restore traffic.

The Risk Management Committee of the government of the State of Mérida was activated, and teams from Civil Protection, fire and police have been deployed to the area to assist with the aftermath of the landslide.
