A strong and shallow earthquake, registered by the USGS as M6.2, hit Baja California, Mexico at 16:39 UTC on November 22, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.2 at a depth of 2 km (1.2 miles).
The epicenter was located 29.2 km (18.1 miles) SW of Las Brisas (population 1 078), 38.6 km (24 miles) W of Vicente Guerrero (population 11 455), and 52.7 km (32.7 miles) WNW of Lázaro Cárdenas (population 16 294).
34 000 people are estimated to have felt strong shaking, 49 000 moderate, and 1 130 000 light.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
