Heavy downpours bring hail and flooding to Saudi Arabia and Yemen

Severe weather struck Saudi Arabia and Yemen last week, with flooding and hail reported in some areas. On Thursday, June 17, 2021, three people died in Al-Shamaitin after being swept away by floodwaters. On Friday, June 18, the Taif region was lashed by hailstorms and downward winds, causing traffic disruption and significant flooding.

In Yemen, heavy rains on Thursday triggered flooding in the district of Al-Shamaitin, Taiz Governorate, southwest of the country. Three children died after being carried away by the waters.

Torrential rains have been battering the country in the past weeks, with some areas witnessing medium to heavy rainfalls.

In Saudi Arabia, heavy downpours on Friday were accompanied by downward winds and hailstorms. Flooding was reported in some areas of the Taif region, which disrupted the traffic on some roads.

Thunderstorms continued into the weekend, affecting the areas of Najran, Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, and Makkah.
