The same weather system that caused severe floods in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina over the past couple of days affected neighboring Italy, forcing Emilia Romagna authorities to issue red flood alert.
Several rivers in the region burst their banks on May 13, flooding roads and agricultural fields.
The Italian Fire Service, Vigili del Fuoco, said the Montone river broke its banks, flooding wide areas around Villafranca-San Martino in the province of Forli-Cesena. Two people were reportedly rescued from their flooded home.
Evacuations were also carried out in the province of Modena and other areas.
The Savio River at Castiglione di Ravenna, near Cesena, Province of Ravenna, jumped from 1.53 m (5.01 feet) to 9.8 m (32.15 feet) in 24 hours to May 13. The river's red alert is 8 m (26.24 feet).
During the same period, the Montone River at Ponte Vico rose from 1.5 m (4.92 feet) to 8.83 m (28.96 feet), the FloodList reports.
