A severe hailstorm hit Shimla, the capital and the largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, and its surrounding region on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. IMD office warned residents of Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh to expect thunderstorms, squalls and gusty winds through Friday, May 11.

The storm in Shimla was accompanied by heavy rain and severe hailstorm which covered the city while gushing waters flooded the roads, The Tribune reports.

It uprooted trees, blew off roofs of kusha houses, disrupted the power supply and badly affected the traffic as vehicles skidded on the hail-covered roads. Crops of tomato, capsicum, cauliflower and stone fruit were damaged.

The high-altitude tribal areas and other higher reaches had a fresh snowfall and Rohtang, Koksar, Marhi and Keylong received 12 cm (4.7 inches), 10 cm (3.9 inches), 8 cm (3.1 inches) and 5 cm (1.9 inches) of snow. The sky remained heavily overcast and Shimla and Kandaghat experienced downpour and recorded 62 mm (2.4 inches) rain.
