Strong and shallow M6.6 earthquake hits Bouvet Island region, South Atlantic

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.6 hit Shaka Fracture Zone, ENE of Bouvet Island, South Atlantic Ocean at 16:03 UTC on January 28, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.6 at a depth of 2 km (1.2 miles).

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 443 km (275 miles) ENE of Bouvet Island and 2204.9 km (1370.1 miles) SSW of Hermanus, South Africa.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles). There are likely to be no affected structures in this region.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. 

Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said.

  1. intellicast.com shows the earthquake near Bouvet Island, on January 28, and it looks like there’s smoke around the NE side of the island. you can see the smoke on Google map too.
