Dangerous mesoscale storm spawns tornadoes and wreaks havoc across Parana, Brazil

A major tornado multivortex wreaked havoc across the western portion of the Brazilian state of Parana on November 19, 2015. The system has passed 12 cities causing major devastation along its way.

A large storm system spawned a twister multivortex, causing enormous damage across the affected area, according to the local media. In the city of Marechal Cândido Rondon alone, 31 877 people have been affected by the severe weather event, as of November 21. 1 200 homes have been damaged, 12 people injured and 520 have been left homeless. No victims have been reported so far.

Winds of 115 km/h (71.5 mph) have been reported in the area. Affected municipalities include: Marechal Cândido Rondon, Campo Mourao, Cordelia, Curitiba, Inácio Martins, Jaboti, Mamborê, Maringa, Pranchita, Quatro Pontes and Umuarama.
Media reported Rondon and Quatro Pontes have been directly hit by a tornado touch down, while other regions have been affected by strong winds only.

According to numerous video reports and meteorological charts, the storm system, which arrived to Rondon city from the south, was of mesoscale convective nature. It developed into a highly organized embedded supercell, capable of producing violent hailstorms and tornadoes along its path.
