A severe hailstorm has swept over KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa killing at least five people. The KwaZulu-Natal department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) is on high alert following recent severe weather and is monitoring the weather situation in the entire province.

"Our disaster management teams are ready to intervene should the need arise," said Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Saturday as quoted by News24. "We're monitoring the weather situation in the entire province closely and we will act swiftly when called upon to do so."

Five people, including a baby, were killed overnight in parts of KZN during the severe weather conditions, the province's Emergency Medical Services said earlier. In Umlazi, south of Durban, two people were killed and three others injured in separate incidents when two informal shacks collapsed on Friday night, said spokesperson Robert Mckenzie.

In Mariannhill, one person was killed and another was critically injured when their mud dwelling collapsed in a heavy downpour. Mckenzie said two other people were killed in Pietermaritzburg when their houses were struck by lightning.

  1. There is a lot more to come, remove shacks from river banks and power lines that are non isolated because Global weather is changing Rapidly. We have taken too long to head to the warning signs and now we have tornadoes and super storms on their way. With the Blood moons on their way there will be a sharp increase as from February to September
