Storms sparking flooding, mudslides and lightning strikes have taken at least seven lives in Sri Lanka, according to government authorities.

The Disaster Management Center of Sri Lanka said the floods and mudslides killed five people in the Ratnapura district. A further two people were struck and killed by lightning, the center stated.

Nearly 300 area homes were reportedly damaged by the floods and mudslides.

This tragic weather impact was overshadowed by much worse flooding between November 2010 and February 2011. A series of outbreaks of extreme rain unleashed flooding that ultimately killed at least 43 people, while adversely affecting more than 1 million others, AccuWeather reported.
