More than 22 killed, dozens injured and thousands marooned as severe storms continue raging across India

Severe storms continue raging across India this week, with more than 22 new lives lost in three states over the past 48 hours.

Thirteen people were killed and at least 28 others injured due to powerful dust storms and thunderstorms in different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, NDTV reports. Sitapur, Gonda, Shravasti, Faizabad, and Basti districts, along with other adjoining areas of the state, were affected with wind speeds over 75 km/h (46.6 mph) that lasted for more than 2 hours.

Of the thirteen people who died, six people were killed in Sitapur, three people died in Gonda, two in Kaushambi, and one person each in Faizabad and Hardoi. 17 people were injured in Sitapur, while 11 were hurt in Faizabad, according to NDTV.

The storm comes just 12 days after 15 people were killed and 9 others injured in similar storms across the state.

In about two weeks since the 2018 Southwest Monsoon reached the state of Kerala, 27 people have been killed due to heavy rain, including a nine-year-old girl who was among the 3 who died in a landslide on June 14. Around nine people are suspected to be missing in Kozhikode.

Several districts of Kerala, including Kozhikode, Alappuzha have reported waterlogging and hilly areas of Malappuram, Wayanad have witnessed landslides. The rain has also caused major damage to crops.

Schools have been closed today in Kottayam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode and Wayanad. Several other educational institutions will also remain closed today in worst-affected regions of these districts.

Over the past 48 hours, torrential rains in the two northeastern states of Tripura and Manipur claimed lives of at least 6 people. Manipur has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges and government offices, after most parts of capital Imphal were flooded, according to NDTV.

Thousands of people are marooned in Assam as flash floods hit several districts in the northeastern part of the state. Four trains have been canceled today due to floods.

The key link connecting southern Assam and Manipur has been destroyed in landslides; thousands of vehicles on either side of the border are stranded. Power supply have also been disrupted say reports.  

The situation is unlikely to improve as the regional meteorological office has warned of heavy rain in the next 24 hours.
