Violent rainstorms hit Shanghai, causing severe flooding
Two big cities in China, Xi’an and Shanghai, were hit by violent rainstorms on September 11, 2023.
Among them, Shanghai Pudong received 105 mm (4.1 inches) of rainfall in 45 min. Xi’an, located in the inland northwest, also experienced 64 mm (2.5 inches) of rainfall in 1 hour, causing severe waterlogging.
Heavy to record-breaking rains continued falling over southern China for nearly a week after the landfall of Typhoon Haikui on September 5.
The 24-hour rainfall in Bobai, Guangxi, broke the record with 368.8 mm (14.51 inches) and 446.2 mm (17.5 inches) at automated weather stations. Fortunately, 30 000 people were relocated in time and there were no casualties.
