Tornado Emergency issued as violent tornado strikes Marion, Illinois
A violent tornado struck south of Marion in Williamson County, Illinois, between 18:00 and 19:00 CDT on May 16, 2025, prompting the U.S. National Weather Service to issue a rare Tornado Emergency for the area. The tornado destroyed homes near Market Road, caused significant structural damage across southern Marion, and formed part of a broader Midwest outbreak that killed at least 16 people.
Tornado Emergency is an enhanced form of tornado warning issued by the NWS, reserved for confirmed, ongoing tornadoes posing an imminent threat to life and property, typically when a large, destructive tornado is moving into a populated or particularly vulnerable area.
This event was part of a broader severe weather outbreak that produced at least 16 tornadoes across the Midwest, killing at least 16 people in total.
The tornado touched down near Market Road and moved southeast at approximately 95 km/h (60 mph), crossing Interstate 57 and North Refuge Road. It then approached Creal Springs and Carrier Mills.
Radar analysis indicated a violent tornado, with a well-defined debris ball showing reflectivity exceeding 63 dBZ and velocity signatures consistent with strong tornadic rotation. Preliminary assessments and damage footage suggest an intensity in the EF-3 to EF-4 range, though official classification from the NWS is pending.
The NWS office in Paducah issued a Tornado Emergency at 18:20 CDT for Marion, Creal Springs, Carrier Mills, and surrounding areas in Williamson and Saline counties, warning of a confirmed large and destructive tornado on the ground.
Several homes were leveled along Market Road while multiple buildings across southern Williamson County sustained major damage. No fatalities have been confirmed in Marion as of May 17, but injuries were reported and are currently unquantified.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) had issued a moderate risk outlook for parts of Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky. The wider outbreak included strong tornadoes in Missouri and Indiana, severe hail events, and widespread power outages.
Tornado damage surveys are planned for the weekend and possibly into early next week.
