Super Typhoon “Trami” threatens Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan

Typhoon "Trami," the 24th named storm, 10th typhoon and the 5th super typhoon of the 2018 Pacific season, has rapidly intensified into a super typhoon on September 24. In just 24 hours, Trami intensified for 65 km/h (40 mph). The storm threatens Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan on September 28 and 29.

At 09:00 UTC on September 24, the center of Typhoon "Trami" was located about 1 000 km (620 miles) SSE of Ishigaki-Shima, Japan and 1 250 km (777 miles) SSE of Taipei, northern Taiwan. The typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 240 km/h (150 mph) and gusts to 296 km/h (184 mph). It's moving northwestward at 15 km/h (9 mph) with central pressure of 925 hPa.

Animated enhanced multispectral satellite imagery depicts a symmetric eyewall surrounding a 55 km (35 miles) wide eye.

Trami is expected to maintain super typhoon strength through 09:00 UTC, September 27, peaking at 270 km/h (167 mph) over the next 24 hours.

The current forecast track takes the typhoon toward Ishigaki-Shima, Japan. It should reach the island around 06:00 UTC on September 29 with maximum sustained winds of 204 km/h (127 mph).
