Observation flight confirms new ash emissions at White Island volcano
Minor ash emissions were confirmed at Whakaari / White Island, New Zealand, following two short-lived eruptions on October 30, 2025. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 3 and the Aviation Color Code at Orange, indicating minor eruptive activity with uncertain future development. An observation flight on November 3 confirmed an ash plume rising 400–500 m (1 300–1 600 feet) above sea level, drifting southeast for 5–8 km (3–5 miles).

Minor eruptive activity continues at White Island volcano, with observation data confirming ongoing low-energy ash emissions.
According to GeoNet, two small eruptions occurred at approximately 13:00 LT (00:00 UTC) on October 30, generating weak ash plumes detected by both satellite and aerial observations.
MetService satellite imagery showed volcanic ash signatures from November 2 and traces of sulphur dioxide (SO2) on October 30 and November 2.
An observation flight on November 3 confirmed a narrow ash plume rising 400–500 m (1 300–1 600 feet) above sea level and dispersing southeast for 5–8 km (3–5 miles). The modelling suggests the emissions are unlikely to reach the New Zealand mainland.

Fine ash deposits have accumulated on the crater floor as a result of the persistent low-level activity. Vent temperatures are around 250°C (482°F) and have increased compared to the previous two measurements prior to the most recent eruptions. However, temperatures remain well below the maximum of approximately 500°C (932°F) recorded earlier this year.
The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 3 (minor eruption) and the Aviation Colour Code at Orange. These levels reflect both the moderate activity observed and the uncertainty associated with the lack of real-time instrumental data from the island.
Monitoring continues through satellite imagery, remote cameras, and periodic observation or gas flights. A dedicated gas flight will be scheduled once conditions permit.
